Director/VP, Business Development

FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports To: Senior Vice President
Department: New Business
Supervises: Manager, Business Development

Position Summary:

The Director/VP of Business Development leads and is responsible for the overall proposal/pitch development, successful delivery, and budget management of new business opportunities. He/She, in collaboration with the department leads, provides strategic leadership to the extended team for each opportunity. The Director/VP is responsible for engaging the appropriate content experts within the agency and keeping them focused to deliver the best agency product. He/She participates in select presentations. The Director/VP provides direct-line management to all personnel within the New Business Team.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in the health sciences, marketing, or communications field
  • Advanced degree a plus (MBA, PharmD)
  • Minimum of 7 years of pharmaceutical marketing and/or agency experience needed to provide insightful recommendations to address prospect challenges
  • Interactive marketing experience preferred

Position Responsibilities:

Demonstrates behavior expected of a professional member of the organization, including but not limited to, the following:

  • Department management
    • Ensures the needs of the New Business Team fit within the agency project flow and do not put undue burden on any agency resource
    • Maintains strong relationships with key members of the agency team
    • Determines manpower needs of department
    • Responsible for managing department within budget
    • Continuously innovates and fine-tunes new business process and deliverables, increasing our success rate
    • Responsible for new business quarterly review and monthly Partner meeting
    • Responsible for new business annual revenue targets
  • Prospect-customized capabilities, proposals, and pitches
    • Functions as internal team leader, ensuring all members of the team work together smoothly and effectively
    • Responsible for development and implementation of presentations, proposals, and pitches (strategic recommendations, creative output, project specifics) with department leads and operations
    • Understands prospect's market, product, and challenges to uncover insight to deliver the big idea
    • Approves client/brand backgrounder provided by Manager for new clients prior to project kickoff meeting
    • Provides creative/scientific team with complete briefing document
    • Reviews, with SVP, creative and scientific output to ensure it is on strategy, on message, and clearly exceeds prospect's expectations
    • Delivers presentations for select opportunities
  • Personnel management
    • Recruits and hires Manager
    • Trains and supervises Manager
    • Identifies and provides developmental opportunities for Manager
    • Conducts Manager annual and midterm performance reviews

Participates in professional growth and development:

  • Attends Agency-sponsored in-services and/or continuing education
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations as necessary

Participates in other activities:

  • Cross trains in other positions as requested
  • Willing to work extra hours to meet impending deadlines
  • Willing to travel (~30%)
